Leadership is a topic that gets thrown around and there are almost endless types of leaders. But what does it actually mean to be a leader? Not only in a specific field or discipline, but just in general. Leadership was once thought to be an innate characteristic but that has since faded. Just having charisma isn’t enough to be an effective leader. Just having a position of authority isn’t enough to be an effective leader. 

 

Being an effective leader that has followers that want to get behind you and back the mission and course you’ve set them on is complex. We try and shed some light on leadership and apply it generally and to a variety of settings. Our work on learning about leadership and developing our own leadership abilities has been eye-opening and we think will help for the better as we try and pass along anything that might be helpful.

ESPN ran a story on a NATA survey looking at the pressure ATs are put under from coaches and administrators at times to make decisions that aren't always in the best interest of the student-athlete. They address the issue of if coaches should have the ability to fire their athletic trainers and what those reporting structures should look like in an athletic department. Lots to unpack in this complex world of athletic and athletic training.  EPISODE.

It is one thing to learn about leadership and the different aspect that can go into it. It can be a completeley other thing to take the next step and apply it when you think you need to or to stand up in a situation you don't agree with. Then leadership isn't always so easy. We talk about how the skills Jocko lays out as he has experienced them in the military have application almost anywhere you can find a leader.
